TACKLING FAST FASHION

Submitted by Dixons Allerton Academy

“We tackled the issue of Fast Fashion which is an ongoing crisis in modern society. Many people buy from companies that exploit their workers and refuse to give them their basic human rights whilst making huge profits themselves.

We created various posters and put them around the school to create more awareness between teachers and students.”

“Me and a group of girls carried out a research project where we had to find out statistics and many other features to put on our presentation which we presented to all of the Year 9 classes in our school.

This was to increase their understanding of who is dominantly exploited to produce garments (which is women from diverse backgrounds).

We also gave them handouts which had many different ideas of how to reduce the support of unethical brands. Some ideas were to buy only second hand clothing and only get items that are made from organic materials.”

WHAT WAS OUR IMPACT?

”The response was amazing as many students resonated with fast fashion. This is because they were previously buying from companies like Shein who severely underpay their workers.

They were happy to receive handouts as it gave them an alternative that makes the world a better place for impoverished women that struggle to feed their family.”

WHAT DID WE LEARN?

I learnt that the statistics for exploitation are a lot higher than what I believed. This was very shocking because it has changed my perspective of buying clothes.

WHAT WOULD WE DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME?

“Next time, I would make it a lot more interactive by perhaps doing a workshop instead with prizes instead.

There were many questions and tasks that we had included but it would be nice to do it differently next time.”
